Week 4 - Chapters

Two weeks until the start of the Wilderness Program!!! For those who have posted and kept up to date I thank you and hope you are enjoying the book. Here are the questions for this week. Please answer all questions, discussion question, and interact with someone in the group. Please don't let someone be left out.

    Chapter 9
    1. He made shavings of wood and put them under the rock, then he made sparks by hitting the hatchet against the rock, then the sparks burst into flames.
    2. Because he had finally made a fire after so long of not having a fire

    2. A turtle
    3. He cracked it then he ate the egg, and licked the shell clean
    4. Because he wanted to go home and eat a hamburger, and see his dad

    1. He started to get used to living alone in the woods
    2. He is so sensitive
    3. He would catch a stick on fire, then wave it up in the air so the pilot of the plane can see that he is lost

    1. He was collecting firewood
    2. Sad, mad, and disappointed

    Chapter 13.
    1. His shoelace
    2. He forgot that if you are looking into the water the thing you are looking at is actually a little bit lower

    1. He smelled like a skunk really badly, and had to take a lot of baths to get the smell off of him
    2. He connected pieces of wood together by making indents in the wood so they wood stack
    3. He made a pool of water in the lake where the fish came in then they couldn't get out, so he could just pick them up right out of the water

  3. Bekah W Chapter 9
    1) first he tried to use dried grass, bark,and small stick. Then he used the birch tree bark. And cut it into tiny pieces.
    2) He thought it was like a guard

    4) He had to keep hoping that they had not forgotten him

    Chapter 9
    1) He used dry grass, twigs, bark, and bark shavings. He had to strike his hatchet to make sparks a few times and then blow on the sparks
    2) He felt so accomplished that he could make it and he didn't have anyone to talk to so he felt like it was his friend.

    3) raw He sharpened a stick and poked a hole in the egg with it and drank them
    4) He was afraid if he stopped thinking about them, they would stop thinking about him.

    Chapter 11
    1) He was more slim than he was. He looked not like a city boy anymore.
    2) When he was hearing things, his mind would register it. He would look for the sound and really see it not just notice it.
    3) He would get a flaming stick and take it to the roof of his shelter to light the bonfire he built.

    1) the swelling in his head went down and his stomach is was caved in

    Chapter 9
    1. He got rocks and put them in a circle and filled it with grass and bark shavings. He then struck a rock with the hatchet and blew on the sparks.
    2. Because the fire was hungry like him and he had gone so long with out it.
    Chapter 10
    1. eggs
    2. a turtle
    3. he stabbed a little hole in them and drank the yolk.
    4. He hoped he would still be rescued

    1. He became skinny, his bones showed. His senses became stronger
    2. He was thinking more clearly, and he focused on survival
    3. He would light a signal fire

    1. He was working on making his bow
    2. Alone, sad, hopeless, and he felt like he would never get out of this place
    Chapter 13
    1. His shoe lace
    2. He noticed the arrow looked bent or broke in the water, thats why he wasn't catching the fish.

    1. He was blind and stunk really bad
    2. He found a dead pine with many small branches sticking out.
    3. He built an enclosure in the lake to trap the fish until he wanted to eat them.

    Chapter 9
    1. He took birch bark, wove it into a nest, and threw sparks into it. This created a fire.
    2. Brian felt like the fire was his friend because it felt like a presence around him.

    Chapter 10
    1. Brian found turtle eggs.
    2. Either a freshwater lake turtle or a snapping turtle laid the eggs.
    3. He poked a hole in the shell and drank the yolk.
    4. Brian did not want to stop thinking about the searchers because they might forget about him.

    Chapter 11
    1. Brian had lost weight and his skin was looking like leather.
    2. His mind was different since the crash because he would actually know and feel what that thing is instead of just barely noticing it.
    3. His plan was to start his bonfire.
    4. He realized he could eat fish.

    1) Blinded for two hours, and he stunk really bad.
    2) He found a pine log and cut branches off close so that he could use it as a ladder.
    3) He built his own miniature pond to trap them.

    2.The water bends light and Brian was not able to hit any fish.

    1.He stunk and was blind for a while.
    2.Brian found a pine branch that had branches perfect for a ladder.
    3. Brian built a trap so that he could pick off (kill) fish when he was hungry.

    1. The steps Brian took to start a fire were: he tried grass and twigs, then a combination of the two, then a $20 bill, then birch wood, then birch wood chopped fine like hair in a pile with an indention to catch the sparks and finally he blew on the sparks to start the fire.
    2.Brian felt the fire was like his friend because it was all he had to keep him safe, warm and could be used as a signal.
    Chapter 10
    1.Brian found turtle eggs on the shore.
    2.In the middle of the night a turtle had laid the eggs.
    3. Brian ate the eggs by using the sharp end of the hatchet to sharpen a stick and he poked a hole in it and sucked the inside out.
    4. Brian didn't want to stop thinking about the searchers because he thought if he stopped thinking about them they would stop thinking about him.

    1.He used bark as fuel he blew on it and made sparks.

    1. striking the hatchet against the wall where it hit and left a notch last night to test if the wall actually sparked
    shredding the bark(after realizing that it looked like paper)
    then creating a nest of the shredded bark
    striking the hatchet against the wall creating a shower of sparks that fall into the "nest"
    blowing on the nest of sparks after he realized that they were starving and needed oxygen

    2. he trimmed the branches from two fallen trees that he found then cut notches in them so he could put branches that would act like the rungs in a ladder

    3. he dug a small "holding pool" putting rocks at the entrance so it's a one way type of thing

    Chapter 11
    1. Brian changed physically by his stomach caved in.
    2. Brian's mind was different by when he hears some thing, he knows what it is.
    3. Brian's plan if he heard a plane was he would go to his fire grab a branch and run up to his signal fire and light it up.
    4. When Brian saw the lake he realized he could eat fish.
    Chapter 12
    1.Brian was working on chopping a branch off for his bow when he heard the plane engine.
    2. Three words that describe Brian when the plane flew away are sad, mad and hopeless.

    Chapter 13
    1. Brian used the laces on his shoes for the string on his bow.
    2. Brian couldn't catch any fish with his bow at first because he forgot that water refracted light and he was aiming to high.
    3.Brian found hope to survive

    Chapter 14
    1.The affects Brian had after being sprayed by the skunk were he smelled really bad and he was blinded for two hours and partially blind for two weeks.
    2.Brian made a ladder with a fallen down pine tree.
    3.Brian made a rock pen to trap and store live fish.

    Chapter 9:
    1. First he tore some wood to make a cotton bowl, and then he put some wood under it. Next he caught the sparks.
    2. Because it helped shoo the mosquitoes away.

    Chapter 10:
    1. Eggs
    2. A turtle
    3. He ate them raw.
    4. Because he didn’t want to lose hope.

    Chapter 11:
    1. His bump began to heal and he began to tan.
    2. He began to notice some things differently.
    3. To set a bonfire on when he ever heard a plane.
    4. He could eat fish.

    Chapter 13:
    1. A piece of willow laces.
    2. Because of a light trick. The fish was actually below.
    3. Tough hope.

    Chapter 14:
    1. Burning eyes and skunk smell
    2. One big branch with smaller branches that he cut to 4 – 5 inches to make a ladder
    3. He created a pond.
